General approach on risk
General approach on risk

In the European Union one cannot market a PPP (Plant Protection Product) unless it has been scientifically proven that: it has no unacceptable adverse effects on farmers, on the resident population or on consumers; it does not cause unacceptable damage to the environment; the product has sufficient efficacy. Using pesticides may constitute a risk: for the professional operator; for the bystander or resident; for the consumer; for the environment. This module will explain why in detail, what actions are necessary to be taken to mitigate the risk and, if necessary, where in the web and what documents are accessible in order to deeper the topics addressed.

Before spraying
Before spraying

Preparing and using PPP (Plant Protection Products) can be potentially dangerous to your health and the environment. Any pesticide based product must be used carefully. Before spraying you need to decide if you really need to spray, which products you have to use and how to use them.

During spraying
During spraying

Spraying is used to place a sufficient effective dose of pesticide on to the target in a safe and timely manner. Protection of the crop must be achieved while minimizing risks to the health of the health of the applicator and to the environment. These objectives can be achieved by: strategies for localized spot or guided treatment (GPS etc) to reduce the quantities applied per hectare; the use of materials limiting drift, such as drift reduction nozzles; by the correct maintenance and calibration of equipment.

After spraying
After spraying

Once the application is completed, it is recommended to clean the sprayer and remove any product that can remain in the tank, pipes, pump or the boom. This operation is all the more important where the sprayer is used for different types of treatment to different types of crop. For example, herbicide residue left behind could contaminate a fungicide or insecticide and cause damage when spraying susceptible crops . Moreover, this operation is made indispensable if we want to avoid rapid deterioration of equipment and clogging, particularly the clogging of spray nozzles.

Integrated Pest Management
Integrated Pest Management

The challenge for agriculture is to meet qualitative and quantitative production objectives and the requirements of sustainable development. Improving agricultural productivity sustainably will need to consider not only new technologies but new methodologies. The continual review of a pesticides registration and authorization in Europe under increasing data requirements and conservative evaluations means that fewer and fewer chemical pesticides are available as tools for crop protection.
